Adverben

Adverben are a class of words in the German language that modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. They provide additional information about how, when, where, or to what extent an action is performed or a quality exists. Adverben often answer questions like "wie?" (how?), "wann?" (when?), "wo?" (where?), "warum?" (why?), or "wie oft?" (how often?).

Unlike adjectives, which typically agree in gender, number, and case with the noun they modify, adverben are invariable. This means they do not change their form. For example, in the sentence "Er läuft schnell" (He runs quickly), "schnell" is an adverb modifying the verb "läuft". If the subject were plural, "Sie laufen schnell", the adverb "schnell" would remain unchanged.

Common categories of adverbs include adverbs of time (e.g., heute, gestern, morgen), adverbs of place (e.g., hier, dort, überall), adverbs of manner (e.g., gut, schlecht, leise), and adverbs of degree (e.g., sehr, zu, genug). Many adverbs are formed by adding suffixes to adjectives, such as "-lich" or "-erweise", although this is not a universal rule. Understanding the function and invariability of adverbs is crucial for constructing grammatically correct and nuanced German sentences.
