Adoptium

Adoptium is a community-driven project that provides prebuilt, TCK-verified OpenJDK binaries for a range of platforms and architectures. Its aim is to supply high-quality Java runtimes that are freely available to developers and organizations, independent of vendor-specific distributions. The project is hosted under the Eclipse Foundation as the Eclipse Adoptium Working Group, and its flagship binary distribution is released under the Temurin name.

History and branding: The effort began as AdoptOpenJDK, formed to create openly available OpenJDK builds around 2017. In 2021 it rebranded to Adoptium and subsequently joined the Eclipse Foundation as Eclipse Adoptium. The primary binary distribution is branded Temurin, with additional related projects and tools developed by the same community.

Scope and licensing: Temurin provides builds for multiple Java versions, emphasizing long-term support releases, and supports common operating systems such as Linux, Windows, and macOS, across major processor architectures. All builds are based on OpenJDK and are released under the GPL version 2 with the Classpath Exception.

Governance and community: The project is governed by the Eclipse Foundation through a working group that includes maintainers from member organizations and volunteers. Contributions are coordinated through open issue trackers, mailing lists, and community processes, reflecting a neutral, vendor-agnostic stance.

Impact and usage: Adoptium/Temurin binaries are widely used in development, testing, and production environments, and are popular choices for CI pipelines and cloud deployments as a standard OpenJDK runtime.
