Adjektiivipääteinen
Adjektiivipääteinen is a Finnish grammatical term referring to a word ending in an adjective. This concept is not a word itself but rather a descriptive category for certain Finnish words. Finnish adjectives, like other word classes, inflect for case, number, and sometimes degree. When an adjective takes on one of these endings, it is considered adjektiivipääteinen in that specific form. For example, the basic form of the adjective "kaunis" (beautiful) is uninflected. However, when it is used in a sentence such as "Kaunis talo" (a beautiful house), it agrees with the noun in number and case. If the sentence were "Kauniita taloja" (beautiful houses), the adjective "kauniita" would be adjektiivipääteinen, having taken the partitive plural ending. Similarly, in comparative and superlative forms, such as "kauniimpi" (more beautiful) or "kaunein" (most beautiful), these forms also involve adjective endings. The term highlights the morphological behavior of adjectives in Finnish, emphasizing their capacity to change form according to grammatical context. It is a descriptive label used in linguistic analysis to classify and understand the inflected forms of adjectives.
