Adabiy

Adabiy is a cross-linguistic term used in several languages of the Middle East and Central Asia to denote literature or literature-related matters, as well as broader notions of culture and manners. As an adjective, it typically translates to literary or cultured, and in some contexts it can also relate to etiquette or refined taste, reflecting the broader sense of adab as knowledge of culture and refinement.

Etymology and variants: The word derives from the Semitic root adab, associated with manners, knowledge, and literature. The suffixes and phonetic forms vary by language, yielding adabiy, adabi, edebi, and ədəbi among others. These cognates appear in Uzbek, Tajik, Azerbaijani, Turkish, Persian, Urdu, and related languages, each with its own spelling and usage conventions.
