AdS4/CFT3 refers to a specific instance of the broader Anti-de Sitter/Conformal Field Theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence, a fundamental concept in theoretical physics proposing a duality between gravity theories in higher-dimensional spacetime and quantum field theories in lower dimensions. In this particular case, "AdS4" denotes a four-dimensional anti-de Sitter space, a spacetime with constant negative curvature commonly used as a gravitational background in string theory and quantum gravity research. The "CFT3" indicates a three-dimensional conformal field theory residing on the boundary of the AdS4 space.

The AdS4/CFT3 duality specifically relates M-theory or string theory formulated on AdS4 backgrounds to a three-dimensional conformal field theory. This correspondence has been most notably exemplified through the ABJM theory, which is a U(N) x U(N) superconformal Chern-Simons matter theory with N=6 supersymmetry. It was proposed by Aharony, Bergman, Jafferis, and Maldacena in 2008 as a candidate dual for M-theory on AdS4 x S^7/Z_k, where Z_k is a discrete quotient of the seven-sphere.

The AdS4/CFT3 duality has provided insights into non-perturbative aspects of quantum field theories, strongly coupled systems, and quantum gravity. It plays a crucial role in ongoing research related to holography—a principle suggesting that gravitational theories can be described entirely by lower-dimensional boundary theories.
