Abisolieren

Abisolieren is a German term that translates to "stripping" or "insulation removal" in English. It refers to the process of removing the outer protective layer, typically insulation, from a wire or cable to expose the conductive material underneath. This is a common and essential step in many electrical and electronic applications, such as making connections, splicing wires, or preparing components for soldering.

The primary purpose of abisolieren is to gain access to the bare conductor so that it can be properly connected to another wire, terminal, or device. The insulation protects the conductor from short circuits, environmental damage, and physical harm. However, this insulation must be removed to facilitate electrical conductivity.

Various tools can be used for abisolieren, ranging from simple wire strippers to more specialized tools depending on the type and gauge of the wire. Wire strippers are the most common, featuring designed notches or blades that can cut through the insulation without damaging the underlying conductor. For more delicate wires, a sharp knife or precision stripper might be employed. The technique involves carefully scoring or cutting the insulation around the wire and then pulling it off. Over-stripping, which damages the conductor, or under-stripping, which leaves too much insulation, can lead to poor connections and potential electrical problems.
