Abdali

Abdali is a name that appears in South Asian and Middle Eastern geography and history. It is most commonly associated with a Pashtun tribal group and with the historical dynasty and empire associated with that group, but it is also used as a place name in Jordan.

The Abdali (also known as Durrani) are a prominent Pashtun tribe centered in Afghanistan and western Pakistan. The dynasty founded by Ahmad Shah Durrani in 1747 is often called the Durrani Empire; Ahmad Shah Durrani is also known as Ahmad Shah Abdali in Persian and Urdu histories. The Abdali/Durrani rulers created a large state that at its height encompassed much of present-day Afghanistan, Pakistan, eastern Iran, and parts of northern India. The dynasty persisted in various forms into the early 19th century, and the term Abdali remains an important ethnonym for a major branch of the Pashtun people.

In Jordan, Abdali refers to a district in Amman developed as a modern urban center, known for the Abdali Project that aims to create a mixed-use district with offices, residences, retail, and cultural facilities.
