The name Abbiege derives from a medieval form of abbaye, signifying its association with the abbey around which the town formed in the 12th century.

Abbiege lies in a fertile valley along the Loran River, at about 180 meters above sea level. The built core concentrates around a market square and church, with surrounding farms. The population is about 2,350 residents.
