Abaiang

Abaiang is an atoll in the Republic of Kiribati, located in the Gilbert Islands archipelago. It lies about 30 kilometers north of the capital, Tarawa, and is part of the North Gilbert Islands group. The atoll consists of a chain of approximately 17 islets encircling a large, shallow lagoon. The main island, also named Abaiang, is the largest and most populated.

The history of Abaiang is intertwined with the broader history of the Gilbert Islands. It was a significant point of contact for early European explorers and missionaries. The London Missionary Society established a presence on Abaiang in the mid-19th century, and the island played a role in the introduction of Christianity to the region. During World War II, like many islands in the Pacific, Abaiang was affected by the conflict, although it did not see major battles.

The economy of Abaiang is primarily based on subsistence agriculture and fishing. Coconut cultivation for copra production is a key economic activity, alongside the harvesting of fish and other marine resources from the lagoon and surrounding ocean. The island's population lives in several villages, with the largest being on the main island. Traditional ways of life remain important, though modern influences are present. Access to Abaiang is typically by air via a small airstrip or by sea. The atoll's natural beauty, including its pristine lagoon and beaches, contributes to its appeal, though tourism is not yet a major industry.
