Aaltoilmiöissä, or wave phenomena, refers to a broad category of physical processes characterized by the propagation of disturbances that transfer energy. These disturbances can manifest in various forms, including mechanical waves, electromagnetic waves, and quantum waves. Mechanical waves require a medium to travel, such as sound waves traveling through air or seismic waves propagating through the Earth's crust. Electromagnetic waves, on the other hand, can travel through a vacuum and encompass phenomena like light, radio waves, and X-rays. Quantum waves, described by quantum mechanics, relate to the wave-like behavior of subatomic particles.

Key characteristics of wave phenomena include wavelength, frequency, amplitude, and speed. Wavelength is the spatial distance between successive crests or troughs of a wave, while frequency denotes the number of oscillations per unit of time. Amplitude represents the maximum displacement or extent of oscillation, and speed indicates how quickly the wave propagates. Waves can exhibit superposition, where multiple waves can occupy the same space and their amplitudes combine. Interference, a consequence of superposition, can lead to constructive interference, where wave crests align to create a larger amplitude, or destructive interference, where crests and troughs cancel each other out, resulting in a reduced amplitude. Diffraction, another fundamental wave property, describes the bending of waves as they pass around obstacles or through narrow openings, demonstrating their non-linear propagation. Understanding these phenomena is crucial in fields ranging from acoustics and optics to seismology and telecommunications.
