Aakkosjärjestelmä, also known as alphabetical order, is a system used to arrange words or letters according to the conventional sequence of the alphabet. In Finnish, this system follows the standard Latin alphabet with the inclusion of specific Finnish letters like Å, Ä, and Ö, which are placed at the end of the alphabet. This ordering is fundamental for organizing dictionaries, library catalogs, and many other reference materials, ensuring that information can be easily located and browsed.

The process of alphabetizing involves comparing the first letter of each word. If the first letters are the same, the second letters are compared, and so on, until a difference is found or one word ends. For example, when comparing "omena" and "orava," both start with 'o'. The second letters are 'm' and 'r'. Since 'm' comes before 'r' in the alphabet, "omena" precedes "orava" in alphabetical order.

Special considerations arise with compound words or words containing diacritical marks. In Finnish, the rules for alphabetization are generally consistent, with the special characters Å, Ä, and Ö treated as distinct letters appearing after Z.
