ATPsünteesi, also known as ATP synthesis, is the process by which adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is created. ATP is the primary energy currency of the cell, powering most cellular activities. This synthesis occurs through several mechanisms, with the most significant being oxidative phosphorylation and substrate-level phosphorylation.

Oxidative phosphorylation is the dominant pathway for ATP production in aerobic organisms. It involves a series of protein complexes embedded in the inner mitochondrial membrane (in eukaryotes) or the plasma membrane (in prokaryotes). Electrons are passed along an electron transport chain, releasing energy that is used to pump protons across the membrane, creating an electrochemical gradient. This gradient then drives the enzyme ATP synthase, which catalyzes the addition of a phosphate group to adenosine diphosphate (ADP) to form ATP. Oxygen serves as the final electron acceptor in this process.

Substrate-level phosphorylation is a less efficient method of ATP production, occurring directly during certain metabolic reactions. In this process, a high-energy phosphate group is transferred from a substrate molecule to ADP, forming ATP. Glycolysis and the Krebs cycle are examples of metabolic pathways that involve substrate-level phosphorylation. While it produces fewer ATP molecules compared to oxidative phosphorylation, it is crucial for ATP generation in anaerobic conditions and as a supplementary source of energy. Photosynthesis in plants and some bacteria also involves ATP synthesis, specifically through photophosphorylation, where light energy is used to create a proton gradient to drive ATP synthase.
