ATPsynteesiin refers to the process of ATP synthesis, the creation of adenosine triphosphate. ATP is the primary energy currency of the cell, powering most cellular activities. This synthesis primarily occurs through two main mechanisms: substrate-level phosphorylation and oxidative phosphorylation.

Substrate-level phosphorylation is a direct enzymatic process where a phosphate group is transferred from a high-energy substrate molecule to adenosine diphosphate (ADP), forming ATP. This method is less efficient than oxidative phosphorylation and occurs during glycolysis and the Krebs cycle.

Oxidative phosphorylation is the main ATP-producing pathway in aerobic organisms. It involves a series of protein complexes embedded in the inner mitochondrial membrane (in eukaryotes) or the plasma membrane (in prokaryotes). Electrons are passed along an electron transport chain, releasing energy that is used to pump protons across the membrane, creating a proton gradient. This electrochemical gradient then drives ATP synthase, an enzyme that uses the flow of protons back across the membrane to catalyze the phosphorylation of ADP to ATP. Photosynthesis in plants and some bacteria also utilizes a similar process, known as photophosphorylation, to generate ATP using light energy. The efficient generation of ATP through these synthetic pathways is fundamental to life.
