The ATEX directives are a set of European Union directives designed to ensure the safety of workers and the public in potentially explosive atmospheres. The term ATEX is derived from the French "Appareils destinés à être utilisés en atmosphère explosive." There are two main ATEX directives.

Directive 2014/34/EU, often referred to as the ATEX Equipment Directive, covers the placing on the market and putting into service of equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. This directive mandates that such equipment must meet specific safety requirements to prevent the ignition of explosive atmospheres. Manufacturers are required to assess the risks associated with their equipment and ensure it complies with the essential health and safety requirements. Certified equipment will bear the CE marking along with the ATEX identification code, which includes the Ex symbol and a category indicating the level of protection.

Directive 1999/92/EC, known as the ATEX Workplace Directive, focuses on the minimum requirements for improving the safety and health protection of workers potentially at risk from explosive atmospheres. This directive places the responsibility on employers to conduct risk assessments, classify potentially explosive areas into zones based on the likelihood and duration of an explosive atmosphere being present, and implement appropriate protective measures. These measures can include eliminating or reducing sources of ignition, selecting suitable equipment (often referencing the Equipment Directive), and establishing safe working procedures. Both directives are crucial for managing the risks associated with flammable gases, vapors, mists, and combustible dusts.
