ASROC

The Anti-Submarine ROCket, commonly known as ASROC, is a sonar-guided, submarine-launched or ship-launched, anti-submarine warfare (ASW) missile system. Developed by the United States, its primary purpose is to deliver a Mark 46 or Mark 50 torpedo, or a nuclear depth charge, to a target submarine. ASROC systems exist in two main forms: the original unguided rocket-propelled version, and the later guided missile variant.

The unguided ASROC, often referred to as the "dog-leg" ASROC due to its flight path, consists of a booster rocket that carries a torpedo to the vicinity of the target. Upon reaching the target area, the booster separates, and the torpedo's own guidance system takes over to home in on the submarine. This system was designed to provide a standoff capability, allowing ships to engage submarines at a greater range than was previously possible with deck-mounted torpedo tubes.

The guided ASROC, also known as the Vertical Launch ASROC (VLA) or the improved ASROC, is a more advanced system. It utilizes a solid-fuel booster rocket to propel the torpedo through the air. Once over the target, the torpedo is released and enters the water, activating its acoustic seeker. This guided version offers improved accuracy and a longer range compared to its predecessor. ASROC has been a cornerstone of ASW for several navies worldwide and has undergone numerous upgrades to maintain its effectiveness against evolving submarine threats.
