ASDUs

ASDUs, or Abstract Syntax Data Units, are fundamental building blocks in telecontrol and telecommunications protocols, particularly those adhering to the IEC 60870-5 standard. They represent a structured way to encapsulate information exchanged between devices, such as a master station and a remote terminal unit (RTU) in a power utility SCADA system. Each ASDU contains a type identification field, an originator address, a common address of the ASDU, and a variable number of Information Objects.

The type identification field specifies the purpose of the ASDU, such as transmitting measured values, status information, or commands. The originator address indicates the sender of the ASDU. The common address of the ASDU is used for addressing specific devices or groups of devices within the network. Information Objects within an ASDU contain the actual data being transmitted, along with specific descriptors like cause of transmission and sequence numbers, allowing for precise interpretation and processing by the receiving system.

ASDUs provide a standardized format for data interchange, ensuring interoperability between diverse equipment from different manufacturers. This structured approach simplifies the design and implementation of SCADA systems, enabling efficient and reliable communication for monitoring and control purposes. The flexibility of ASDUs allows them to accommodate a wide range of data types and application-specific information, making them a robust solution for industrial automation and telecontrol applications.
