ANOVAkalkyyliä refers to the Finnish term for ANOVA calculations. ANOVA, or Analysis of Variance, is a statistical method used to determine whether there are any statistically significant differences between the means of two or more independent groups. It works by partitioning the total variation in the data into different sources of variation. The primary goal of ANOVA is to test a null hypothesis that states there is no difference between the group means against an alternative hypothesis that at least one group mean is different.

The core of ANOVA calculations involves computing several sums of squares, which represent the total variation, variation between groups, and variation within groups. These sums of squares are then used to calculate mean squares, which are essentially variances. The ratio of the variance between groups to the variance within groups forms the F-statistic. This F-statistic is then compared to a critical value from the F-distribution, or a p-value is calculated, to determine if the observed differences are statistically significant.

A one-way ANOVA is the simplest form, used when there is only one independent variable (factor). More complex ANOVA designs exist, such as two-way ANOVA, which can examine the effects of two or more independent variables simultaneously, and also their interaction. The interpretation of ANOVA results hinges on the calculated F-statistic and its associated p-value, guiding the decision to reject or fail to reject the null hypothesis. If the null hypothesis is rejected, post-hoc tests are often conducted to identify which specific group means differ from each other.
