AISsatellitter

AISsatellitter refers to satellites equipped with Automatic Identification System (AIS) receivers. AIS is a terrestrial VHF transponder system used by ships to broadcast their identity, position, course, and speed to other vessels and to shore-based stations. By placing AIS receivers on satellites, it becomes possible to monitor ship traffic on a global scale, even in remote ocean areas or where terrestrial AIS coverage is limited.

The concept of space-based AIS emerged to overcome the limitations of the ground-based system, which has a limited range of approximately 50 nautical miles. AISsatellitter can detect AIS signals from much greater distances, allowing for near real-time tracking of vessels across vast expanses of ocean. This capability is crucial for various applications, including maritime security, search and rescue operations, fisheries monitoring, and the enforcement of environmental regulations.

The first dedicated AIS-receiving satellite, AIS-1, was launched in 2008. Since then, several countries and commercial entities have deployed or planned more AIS-equipped satellites. These satellites collect AIS data and relay it to ground stations, where it is processed and made available to users. The accuracy and reliability of AISsatellitter data have steadily improved with advancements in satellite technology and signal processing techniques. The data provided by these satellites complements existing maritime surveillance systems, offering a more comprehensive view of global maritime activities.
