ABOtyypitys refers to the process of determining an individual's ABO blood group. The ABO blood group system is one of the most important human blood group systems, classifying blood into four main types: A, B, AB, and O. This classification is based on the presence or absence of specific antigens on the surface of red blood cells and corresponding antibodies in the plasma.

Antigen A is present on the red blood cells of type A and AB individuals. Antigen B is present on the red blood cells of type B and AB individuals. Type O individuals have neither A nor B antigens. Correspondingly, individuals with type A blood have anti-B antibodies, type B blood has anti-A antibodies, and type O blood has both anti-A and anti-B antibodies. Transfusing incompatible blood types can lead to a severe and potentially fatal immune reaction called a hemolytic transfusion reaction, where the recipient's antibodies attack and destroy the transfused red blood cells.
