3Dvärijärjestelmä, which translates to "3D color system," is a conceptual framework or a theoretical model that aims to describe and organize color perception in three dimensions. Unlike traditional color models that often represent color in two dimensions (like hue and saturation or hue and lightness), a 3D color system incorporates a third dimension to provide a more complete representation of how humans experience color.

The common dimensions used in 3D color systems are hue, saturation, and lightness or value. Hue refers to the pure color, such as red, green, or blue. Saturation describes the intensity or purity of the color, ranging from a grayscale color to its most vibrant form. Lightness or value represents how light or dark a color is, from black to white. By combining these three attributes, a 3D color system can create a spatial representation, often visualized as a color solid or a color space.

Examples of 3D color models include the Munsell color system, CIE L*a*b* (CIELAB), and the Natural Color System (NCS). The Munsell system, developed in the early 20th century, uses hue, value (lightness), and chroma (saturation) to arrange colors in a visually uniform manner. CIELAB is another widely used system, particularly in digital imaging and industrial color matching, which also defines colors using three perceptual dimensions: L* (lightness), a* (green-red component), and b* (blue-yellow component). NCS is based on the human perception of color as six elementary colors.

The utility of 3D color systems lies in their ability to provide a more intuitive and accurate understanding of color relationships, facilitate color matching, and aid in color design and communication across various fields, including art, design, printing, and scientific research. They allow for a systematic exploration of the entire gamut of perceivable colors.
