3Coms

3Coms, also known as 3Com Corporation, was a multinational networking technology company that designed and manufactured networking hardware and related services. Founded in 1979, it became a leading supplier of Ethernet networking equipment, including network interface cards, hubs, switches, routers, and wireless products, for corporate and service provider markets.

During the 1980s and 1990s, 3Coms expanded through strategic acquisitions to broaden its product lines and geographical reach. Notable acquisitions included Bridge Communications in 1989, which strengthened its bridging and LAN capabilities, and US Robotics in 1997, expanding into consumer and enterprise modem and connectivity products. The company also built a security portfolio through the acquisition of TippingPoint and other security-focused firms.

3Coms played a significant role in the growth of Ethernet-based networking and network infrastructure for enterprise campuses and data centers. Its products supported local area networks, wide area networks, and later integrated security and wireless solutions as the market evolved toward converged networks.

In 2010, Hewlett-Packard acquired 3Coms for about $2.7 billion, integrating its networking business into HP's enterprise organization. The acquisition marked a major consolidation in the networking hardware industry and led to the rebranding of many products under the HP Networking line. The 3Coms brand gradually faded as the business units were integrated into HP's portfolio.
