The primary industrial application of 2methylbenzene is as a precursor in the production of phthalic anhydride, which is used in the manufacture of plasticizers, dyes, and resins. It is also used as a solvent in paints, lacquers, and varnishes, and as a component in gasoline. It can be oxidized to phthalic acid, which is then further processed into phthalic anhydride. Exposure to high concentrations of 2methylbenzene can cause irritation to the eyes, skin, and respiratory system.
