2-Methylacrylate is the IUPAC name for methyl methacrylate, a colorless, volatile liquid with a characteristic acrid odor. It is an organic compound with the chemical formula C5H8O2. 2-Methylacrylate is a monomer, meaning it is a small molecule that can join together with other identical molecules to form a long chain called a polymer. The polymer formed from 2-methylacrylate is known as polymethyl methacrylate, or PMMA.

PMMA is a transparent thermoplastic commonly known by trade names such as Plexiglas, Lucite, and Perspex. It is widely used as a shatter-resistant alternative to glass. Applications of PMMA include windows, aquariums, medical devices, signage, and lenses. 2-Methylacrylate is produced industrially through several chemical processes, most commonly via the acetone cyanohydrin process or by the oxidation of isobutylene. It is flammable and requires careful handling and storage to prevent polymerization, which can be initiated by heat, light, or contaminants.
