1,1-Dichloroethane, also known as ethylidene dichloride, is an organochlorine compound with the chemical formula C2H4Cl2. It is a colorless liquid with a sweet odor. It is isomers with 1,2-dichloroethane, differing in the position of the chlorine atoms on the ethane backbone.

1,1-Dichloroethane is produced industrially by the addition of hydrogen chloride to vinyl chloride or by the chlorination of ethane. It is used as a solvent for resins, fats, and oils. It also finds application as an intermediate in the synthesis of other organic chemicals, including vinylidene chloride, a monomer for polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC) plastics. Historically, it was used as a refrigerant and in fumigation.

This compound is volatile and flammable. Exposure to 1,1-dichloroethane can occur through inhalation, skin contact, or ingestion. Inhalation of high concentrations can cause central nervous system depression, leading to dizziness, nausea, and potentially unconsciousness. Skin contact may cause irritation. Long-term or repeated exposure has been associated with liver and kidney damage in animal studies.
