Õhkimist, often translated as sighing or gasping, is a physiological and sometimes emotional act involving a deeper than usual inhalation followed by a slower, often audible exhalation. It serves several purposes, both involuntary and voluntary. Physiologically, a sigh can help to reinflate collapsed alveoli in the lungs, a process that occurs naturally during normal breathing. This can be particularly important after periods of shallow breathing or even during sleep.

Emotionally, õhkimist is frequently associated with a release of tension, stress, or a sense of relief. When people sigh after a difficult task or a moment of anxiety, it can signify a relaxation of the nervous system.
