Érzékszervek, often translated as sensory organs, are the biological structures within living organisms responsible for detecting external stimuli and transmitting that information to the central nervous system for processing. These organs are crucial for perception, enabling an organism to interact with and understand its environment.

In humans and many other animals, the primary sensory organs include the eyes for vision, the ears for hearing, the nose for olfaction (smell), the tongue for gustation (taste), and the skin for somatosensation (touch, temperature, pain, and pressure). Each of these organs contains specialized receptor cells that are sensitive to specific types of energy or chemicals. For example, photoreceptor cells in the eyes respond to light, while hair cells in the inner ear respond to vibrations.

The information gathered by sensory organs is converted into electrical signals through a process called transduction. These signals then travel along sensory neurons to the brain or other central nervous system components. The brain interprets these signals, allowing for conscious awareness of the external world, as well as initiating appropriate physiological or behavioral responses.

Beyond these commonly recognized organs, many organisms possess other specialized sensory structures. Some animals can detect magnetic fields, electric currents, or infrared radiation, expanding their ability to perceive their surroundings in ways humans cannot. The diversity of sensory organs reflects the wide range of environments and ecological niches occupied by life on Earth, each adapted to detect the most relevant stimuli for survival and reproduction.
