Återbetalningstiden, often translated as payback period, is a financial metric used to determine the time required for an investment to generate enough cash flow to recover its initial cost. It is a simple yet widely used method in capital budgeting to assess the liquidity and risk of a project. The calculation involves dividing the initial investment by the expected annual cash flow. A shorter payback period is generally considered more favorable, as it implies a quicker return of capital and a lower risk of the investment becoming obsolete or facing unforeseen problems.

However, the payback period has limitations. It does not consider the time value of money, meaning that cash flows received in the future are not discounted to their present value. Furthermore, it ignores any cash flows generated after the payback period has been reached, which could be significant. Despite these drawbacks, the payback period serves as a useful screening tool. Projects with a payback period exceeding a predetermined threshold are often rejected, even if they might be profitable in the long run. It is frequently used in conjunction with other investment appraisal techniques, such as Net Present Value (NPV) and Internal Rate of Return (IRR), to provide a more comprehensive evaluation of investment opportunities. In essence, it offers a quick indication of how long an investment's capital is tied up.
