Ümbrikuid

Ümbrikuid, often transliterated as "umbrikuid," refers to envelopes in the Estonian language. These are common stationery items used for enclosing letters, cards, documents, or other flat items for mailing or delivery. Envelopes are typically made of paper and come in various sizes, shapes, and colors to suit different purposes.

The most common type of envelope is the standard business envelope, often referred to as an "E4" or "C5" size in European standards, which is suitable for A4 or A5 paper folded once or twice, respectively. Smaller envelopes, like those for greeting cards, are also widely used. Envelopes usually have a flap on one side that can be sealed, either with adhesive, a moistenable gum, or a peel-and-stick strip. Security envelopes, featuring special designs on the inside, are used to obscure the contents from view.

In Estonia, like in many other countries, envelopes are an integral part of personal and business communication. They are readily available in post offices, stationery stores, and supermarkets. The design and quality of an envelope can sometimes convey a certain impression, with thicker, higher-quality paper often used for formal correspondence or invitations. The act of addressing and sending an ümbrik remains a fundamental method of transmitting information in both private and professional contexts.
