Ülekandealajaam

Ülekandealajaam, also known as a transmission substation, is a crucial component in an electrical power system. Its primary function is to step up or step down voltage levels to facilitate the efficient transmission and distribution of electricity. In essence, it acts as an intermediary between high-voltage transmission lines and lower-voltage distribution networks.

Transmission substations typically receive power from generating stations at very high voltages, often hundreds of thousands of volts. At these high voltages, electricity can be transmitted over long distances with minimal energy loss. Within the substation, transformers are used to increase the voltage to even higher levels suitable for long-haul transmission. Conversely, as electricity approaches populated areas and needs to be distributed to homes and businesses, substations are employed to reduce the voltage.

These voltage reduction steps occur in stages. First, transmission substations might step down the voltage to an intermediate level for regional distribution. Subsequently, distribution substations then further reduce this voltage to levels that can be safely and effectively delivered to consumers, typically in the range of a few thousand volts to a few hundred volts.

Beyond voltage transformation, ülekandealajaamad also house essential equipment for controlling, protecting, and monitoring the flow of electricity. This includes circuit breakers, switches, relays, and surge arresters, all designed to ensure the stability and reliability of the power grid and to protect equipment from faults and overloads.
