The objective for the side with the pawn is to promote it to a queen or another piece, thereby achieving checkmate or a decisive material advantage. The defending king's goal is to prevent the pawn's promotion, usually by blocking its path or capturing it.

The outcome of an üksikruudud position depends heavily on the pawn's position on the board, the squares it can advance to, and the proximity of the defending king. Certain squares, particularly those on the sixth or seventh rank, offer significant advantages to the attacking side.
