Øyelokket

Øyelokket, often referred to as eyelid, is a mobile fold of skin and muscle that covers and protects the eye. Humans have two eyelids, an upper and a lower one. These structures play a crucial role in maintaining ocular health and vision.

The primary function of the eyelid is protection. By blinking, the eyelids rapidly sweep across the surface of the eye, removing dust, debris, and foreign particles. This action also spreads tears, which lubricate and nourish the cornea, preventing dryness and irritation. The eyelids can also shield the eye from excessive light and physical impact.

Beneath the skin of the eyelid are several layers, including muscle, connective tissue, and glands. The orbicularis oculi muscle is responsible for closing the eyelid, while the levator palpebrae superioris muscle lifts the upper eyelid. Meibomian glands, located within the eyelids, produce an oily substance that forms the outer layer of the tear film, reducing evaporation and ensuring smooth eyelid movement. Eyelashes, hair-like structures at the edge of the eyelids, provide an additional layer of protection by catching small particles before they reach the eye.

Conditions affecting the eyelids can range from minor irritations like styes and chalazia to more serious issues such as ptosis (drooping eyelid) or ectropion/entropion (turning inward or outward of the eyelid margin). Proper eyelid hygiene and prompt medical attention for any persistent problems are important for maintaining eye health.
