Ælfgifu

Ælfgifu was an Anglo-Saxon noblewoman who lived in the 11th century. She is primarily known for her marriage to the future King Canute the Great. Their union was significant as it produced two sons, Svein Alfífuson and Harold Harefoot, both of whom would eventually claim the English throne.

The exact details of Ælfgifu's origins and early life are not well-documented, but it is believed she came from a powerful Mercian family. Her marriage to Canute, who was at the time a claimant to the Danish throne and later a conqueror of England, likely served a political purpose, strengthening his ties within England.

After Canute's conquest of England in 1016, Ælfgifu played a role in the administration of the kingdom. She is noted for her involvement in governance, particularly during Canute's absences. She and her son Harold Harefoot were instrumental in establishing English rule in Norway, where Ælfgifu acted as regent for Harold. Historical accounts suggest her rule in Norway was harsh, leading to resentment and eventually rebellion.
