Origin and usage: The coinage is attributed to a hypothetical 2018 discussion by linguist Ava Jensen, created to explore language contact and semantic shift in multilingual settings. Because it is not widely established, some scholars treat ägenemised as a heuristic rather than a rigorously defined mechanism, and it is frequently cited alongside other concepts of lexical change rather than as a standalone theory.

Mechanism: The proposed mechanism involves three stages: seed adoption, where a word gains attention in a single speech community; semantic broadening, in which speakers attach new, broader senses; and diffusion, through which the broadened sense spreads to additional dialects or languages via contact, media, or education. The process is described as yielding a cumulative, multi-layered semantic field around a lexeme rather than a single, uniform meaning.
