The practice is deeply rooted in pagan and later Christian agricultural traditions, symbolizing the renewal of life and the protection of the household from evil spirits.

The ritual typically begins with the preparation of a special basket, known as the *ünnepi kosár*, containing symbolic items such as bread, salt, eggs, and sometimes herbs or flowers. These items represent prosperity, purification, and fertility. In some regions, a decorated wooden cross or a small effigy of a goat or horse may also be included, reflecting older animistic beliefs tied to the protection of livestock.

On the designated day, usually the Sunday after Easter, the head of the household or a designated person visits neighboring homes to perform the blessing. They carry the basket and recite traditional verses or prayers, often accompanied by the ringing of bells or the playing of folk music. The host family welcomes the visitors with hospitality, offering food and drink in return.
