útvarp is the Icelandic term for radio, referring to both the radio receiver and radio broadcasting. It is used for the medium as such and for individual broadcasts or stations when combined in compounds.

útvarps is the genitive singular form of útvarp and is used in compound nouns to indicate association with the radio. Examples include útvarpsstöð, meaning a radio station, and útvarpssending, meaning a radio broadcast. When referring to the device or the medium in a definite sense, the form útvarpið is used, as in hlusta á útvarpið (listen to the radio).

Ríkisútvarpið, or RÚV, is the national public-service broadcaster of Iceland; its name means "the state broadcasting" and reflects the historic role of the radio in Icelandic society.
