This pressure is maintained by the balance between the production and drainage of aqueous humor, a clear fluid that fills the front chambers of the eye. Normal intraocular pressure typically falls within a range of 10 to 21 millimeters of mercury (mmHg).

Elevated intraocular pressure is a significant risk factor for developing glaucoma, a group of eye diseases that can damage the optic nerve and lead to vision loss. However, not everyone with high IOP will develop glaucoma, and some individuals with normal IOP can still experience optic nerve damage. Conversely, low intraocular pressure can also occur and may indicate underlying issues with fluid production or drainage.

Measuring intraocular pressure is a routine part of a comprehensive eye examination. This is usually done using a tonometer, a device that gently touches the surface of the eye to measure the pressure. Maintaining a healthy intraocular pressure is crucial for preserving vision and preventing serious eye conditions.
