øyemuskelparese refers to a weakness or paralysis of one or more of the muscles that control eye movement. These muscles are responsible for moving the eyeball within the orbit and allowing the eyes to follow objects, maintain fixation, and coordinate their movements together. When these muscles are affected, it can lead to a variety of symptoms.

The most common symptom is double vision, also known as diplopia, where an individual sees two images of a single object. This can occur horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, depending on which eye muscles are weakened. The affected eye may also appear misaligned, deviating inward, outward, upward, or downward relative to the other eye. Patients may also experience a loss of vision in one or both eyes, or a feeling of pressure or pain around the eye. In some cases, there might be a drooping eyelid, known as ptosis.

The causes of øyemuskelparese are diverse and can range from neurological conditions to direct injury. Stroke, brain tumors, multiple sclerosis, and myasthenia gravis are common neurological causes that can affect the nerves controlling the eye muscles. Trauma to the head or orbit, infections, and inflammation of the eye muscles themselves can also lead to this condition. Certain medications and toxins can also impair muscle function.

Diagnosis typically involves a thorough eye examination, including tests of eye movement and visual acuity. Imaging studies such as MRI or CT scans may be used to identify underlying structural causes in the brain or orbit. Treatment depends on the underlying cause. If a specific treatable condition is identified, such as myasthenia gravis, targeted medical therapy may be initiated. In cases of nerve damage or stroke, recovery can be slow and may involve vision therapy or, in some instances, surgical correction to improve eye alignment and reduce double vision.
