The primary function of an övergångsritual is to help individuals and the community acknowledge and manage significant transitions. They provide a structured framework for individuals to move from one social status or role to another, often accompanied by a change in identity and responsibilities. This process typically involves three phases: separation, liminality, and incorporation. During separation, the individual is removed from their former status. The liminal phase is a transitional period where the individual is between statuses, often undergoing instruction or testing.
