Överbestämning, a Swedish term, translates to "overdetermination" in English. It is a concept that describes a situation where a system or phenomenon has more constraints or conditions than are strictly necessary to uniquely define its solution or state. This can arise in various fields, including mathematics, physics, engineering, and even linguistics.

In mathematics, an overdetermined system of equations is one where there are more equations than unknown variables. Such a system may have no solution, a unique solution, or infinitely many solutions, depending on the relationships between the equations. If a solution exists, it must satisfy all the equations simultaneously. If no such solution exists, the system is inconsistent.

In physics and engineering, overdetermination can occur when multiple independent measurements or theoretical models are used to describe a single physical quantity or system. If these measurements or models are precise and accurate, they should ideally yield consistent results. Discrepancies might indicate errors in measurement, limitations in the models, or the presence of unaccounted-for factors.
