ötvözete

Ötvözete is a Hungarian term used in metallurgy literature to denote an alloy or the process of alloying. The word refers to the material formed by combining two or more elements, typically metals, as well as to the act of combining them to achieve a new substance with different properties. In technical contexts, ötőzet could be used to indicate either the alloy itself or the procedure of creating it.

An alloy is a substance composed of two or more elements, at least one of which is a metal, designed to achieve properties superior to those of the constituent elements. Alloying aims to improve strength, hardness, wear resistance, or other characteristics. Production generally involves selecting elements, melting them, combining the molten components in specified proportions, and allowing the mixture to cool and solidify.

Common examples include bronze (copper with tin), brass (copper with zinc), steel (an iron–carbon alloy, sometimes with other elements), and various aluminum alloys. In Hungarian terminology, these materials are discussed under categories such as vasötvözetek (iron alloys) and rézötvözetek or bronzötvözetek (copper alloys), with acél referring to steel.
