Öljyntuotanto refers to the process of extracting crude oil from underground reservoirs. This is a complex industrial activity involving several stages. Initially, exploration teams identify potential oil-bearing formations through geological surveys and seismic testing. Once a promising site is located, drilling operations begin to create wells that reach the oil reservoir.

There are several methods for extracting oil. Primary recovery utilizes the natural pressure within the reservoir to push oil towards the well. As this pressure declines, secondary recovery techniques, such as injecting water or gas, are employed to maintain or increase the flow. Tertiary recovery, also known as enhanced oil recovery (EOR), involves more advanced methods like thermal injection (steam) or chemical flooding to mobilize remaining oil.

Crude oil extracted from the ground is then transported, typically via pipelines, tankers, or trucks, to refineries. At refineries, crude oil is processed and separated into various petroleum products like gasoline, diesel fuel, jet fuel, and lubricants. The efficiency and volume of oil production are influenced by factors such as the size and accessibility of reservoirs, the technology used, and economic considerations. Global oil production levels are a significant factor in international energy markets and geopolitical relations.
