Esztéreket is a Hungarian term referring to esters, which are a class of organic compounds derived from acids in which at least one -OH (hydroxyl) group is replaced by an -OR (alkoxy) group. They are formed by the reaction of an alcohol with a carboxylic acid, a process known as esterification. This reaction typically involves the removal of a water molecule. Esztereket are widely found in nature and play crucial roles in biological systems and industrial applications.

Many naturally occurring compounds are esztere, including fats and oils, which are triglycerides – esters formed from glycerol and three fatty acids. These are essential components of living organisms, serving as energy storage and cell membrane components. The characteristic sweet, fruity aromas of many flowers and fruits are also due to the presence of volatile esztere. For example, isoamyl acetate is responsible for the banana flavor, and ethyl butyrate contributes to the apple aroma.

Many artificial flavorings and fragrances are synthesized esztere. They are also used in the production of plastics, such as polyvinyl acetate, which is used in adhesives and paints. Furthermore, certain esztere are used as plasticizers, substances added to polymers to increase their flexibility and durability. The chemical properties of esztere, such as their polarity and boiling points, vary depending on the structure of the parent acid and alcohol, making them versatile compounds for numerous applications.
