A återställningspartition, or recovery partition, is a dedicated area on a computer's hard drive or SSD that contains files and tools needed to restore the system to a known working state. The partition is normally hidden from the user and is protected from accidental deletion or modification by the operating system.

When a system is installed, the recovery partition is created automatically by the manufacturer or the operating‑system installer. It stores a copy of the original operating‑system files, drivers, device‑specific firmware, and a recovery environment such as Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), macOS Recovery, or a Linux Live image. In addition, it may contain tools for troubleshooting, diagnostics and device‑specific restore options.

To use a recovery partition, the user typically restarts the computer and enters the recovery mode by pressing a special key (for example F8, F11, or Command+R). The recovery environment loads from the partition and offers options such as system repair, operating‑system re‑installation, or opening a command prompt. Because the data on the partition is separate from the user’s personal files, a successful restore returns the system to its original configuration regardless of what user data has been deleted or altered.

Advantages of a recovery partition are quick restoration, full system image installation, and minimal download size. Disadvantages include the partition taking up valuable drive space, potential over‑reliance on it for protection against viruses, and the fact that it is often not included in user‑initiated backup plans. Regularly updating the recovery image and verifying its integrity helps ensure that it functions correctly when needed.
