äärevalgustus refers to edge lighting, a technique used in display technology, particularly with liquid crystal displays (LCDs). In this method, light sources are placed along the edges of the display panel, and the light is then diffused across the entire screen. This is in contrast to direct-lit systems where the light sources are positioned directly behind the entire display area.

The primary advantage of äärevalgustus is its ability to create thinner and lighter display panels. This is because the light guide plate and diffusers needed for edge lighting are less bulky than the multiple layers of LEDs required for direct backlighting. This design efficiency has made äärevalgustus a popular choice for laptops, tablets, and many televisions.

However, äärevalgustus can sometimes lead to less uniform backlighting compared to direct-lit systems. This can manifest as slight variations in brightness, particularly towards the edges or corners of the screen, although modern implementations have significantly improved uniformity. The technology involves using light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as the light source, which are positioned along one or more sides of the display. The light then travels through a light guide plate and is dispersed by diffusers to illuminate the LCD pixels evenly.
