ääreishermon

Ääreishermon is a Finnish term that translates to peripheral nervous system in English. The peripheral nervous system comprises all the nerves and ganglia outside of the brain and spinal cord. Its primary function is to connect the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) to the limbs and organs. This extensive network allows the brain to receive sensory information from the body and to send motor commands to muscles and glands.

The peripheral nervous system is broadly divided into two main parts: the somatic nervous system and the autonomic nervous system. The somatic nervous system is responsible for voluntary movements and transmitting sensory information such as touch, pain, and temperature. It includes cranial nerves and spinal nerves. The autonomic nervous system, on the other hand, controls involuntary bodily functions like heart rate, digestion, breathing, and glandular secretions. The autonomic nervous system is further divided into the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, which often have opposing effects to maintain homeostasis.

Damage to the peripheral nervous system, known as peripheral neuropathy, can result in a variety of symptoms including numbness, tingling, weakness, and pain in the affected areas. Causes of peripheral neuropathy are diverse and can include injuries, infections, autoimmune diseases, metabolic problems like diabetes, and exposure to toxins. Treatment depends on the underlying cause and aims to manage symptoms and prevent further nerve damage.
