Key acoustic features include fundamental frequency (F0), which corresponds to the perceived pitch of the voice, and its variations, known as intonation. Another important set of features relates to the spectral characteristics of the sound, such as formants, which are resonant frequencies of the vocal tract that define vowel sounds. Features like amplitude, duration, and energy provide information about loudness and the temporal aspects of speech.

More complex features can capture finer details. These might include measures of spectral tilt, jitter (variability in the fundamental frequency), shimmer (variability in amplitude), and various coefficients derived from spectral analysis, such as Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs). MFCCs, for example, are widely used in speech recognition systems because they effectively represent the spectral envelope of a sound in a way that mimics human auditory perception.
