Äänilankojen, commonly translated as vocal cords or vocal folds, are a pair of elastic bands of muscle tissue located within the larynx, or voice box, in the throat. These structures are fundamental to the production of sound in humans and many other animals. When we breathe, the vocal cords are held apart, allowing air to pass freely through the larynx. However, when we speak, sing, or make other vocalizations, the muscles of the larynx bring the vocal cords together. Air from the lungs is then forced through the narrow opening between them, causing them to vibrate. This vibration creates the raw sound that is subsequently modified by the mouth, tongue, and lips to form distinct words and speech.

The pitch of the sound produced is determined by the tension and thickness of the vocal cords. Tighter, thinner cords vibrate more rapidly, producing higher pitches, while looser, thicker cords vibrate more slowly, resulting in lower pitches. The amplitude of the vibration, influenced by the force of the air passing through, determines the loudness of the sound. Various conditions can affect the vocal cords, including inflammation, nodules, polyps, and paralysis, all of which can lead to changes in voice quality, hoarseness, or loss of voice. Maintaining vocal health involves proper hydration, avoiding overuse, and seeking medical attention for persistent vocal issues.
