Äänihäiriö, known in English as voice disorder, refers to any abnormality in the production or quality of the voice. These disorders can affect pitch, loudness, vocal quality, or resonance. They can arise from a variety of causes, including vocal cord misuse or abuse, structural abnormalities of the vocal cords, neurological conditions, or systemic illnesses.

Common symptoms of äänihäiriö include hoarseness, breathiness, a strained or rough voice, vocal fatigue, pain during speaking, or a change in pitch. The severity of symptoms can range from mild and intermittent to severe and persistent. Diagnosis typically involves a medical history, a physical examination, and often a laryngoscopy, a procedure where a doctor examines the vocal cords using a small camera.

Treatment for äänihäiriö depends on the underlying cause. It may involve voice therapy with a speech-language pathologist to improve vocal technique, medication to address underlying inflammation or infection, or in some cases, surgery to correct structural problems of the vocal cords. Prevention strategies include proper vocal hygiene, such as staying hydrated, avoiding shouting or excessive throat clearing, and seeking early intervention if voice problems arise.
