An ärsytysreaktio, or irritation reaction, is a localized inflammatory response in the skin that occurs after contact with an irritant substance. It is a non-allergic reaction, meaning it does not involve the immune system in the same way an allergic reaction does. The skin's barrier function is compromised by the irritant, leading to symptoms such as redness, itching, burning, dryness, and sometimes blistering or peeling.

The severity of an ärsytysreaktio depends on the nature of the irritant, the duration of contact, and the individual's skin sensitivity. Common irritants include soaps, detergents, solvents, strong acids or bases, and certain cosmetics. The reaction is typically immediate or develops shortly after exposure. Unlike allergic contact dermatitis, an irritation reaction can occur in anyone exposed to a sufficient concentration of an irritant.

Management of an ärsytysreaktio involves removing the offending substance and preventing further exposure. Gentle cleansing of the affected area with mild, fragrance-free products is recommended. Moisturizing the skin helps to restore its barrier function. Topical corticosteroids may be prescribed for more severe cases to reduce inflammation and relieve itching. Protective measures, such as wearing gloves when handling irritants, are crucial in preventing future reactions.
