Direct current flows in one direction only. In a DC circuit, electrons move from the negative terminal to the positive terminal. DC is used in many electronic devices, such as computers, smartphones, and flashlights, where a stable voltage is required. The voltage in DC circuits is typically constant over time.

Alternating current periodically reverses direction. In an AC circuit, the flow of electrons changes direction back and forth. The most common source of AC is the electrical grid, which powers homes and businesses. The voltage in AC circuits fluctuates sinusoidally over time. AC is suitable for long-distance power transmission because its voltage can be easily stepped up or down using transformers. This allows electricity to be transmitted efficiently at high voltages and then reduced to safer, usable levels for appliances. The frequency of AC, measured in Hertz (Hz), indicates how many times the current reverses direction per second. In most of the world, the standard frequency is 50 Hz or 60 Hz.
